THE TASK
Introduction
Recently graduated, you are now working in a design office specialising in the styling, layout and interior design of motor yachts. The head designer calls a meeting to announce that the firm has secured an order for the design work resulting from the conversion of a 50-metre Research Vessel into a yacht. You are told that:
Head Designer’s Brief
The project’s owner and his advisors have identified a suitable hull and we have been given its original hull lines and the existing general arrangement.

The above files will be sent to you in AutoCAD format upon registration.
The owner has requested that we restyle the exterior of the vessel above main deck level and develop a new general arrangement. He has an open mind regarding the styling but, to guide your ideas, I should tell you that he appreciates ‘cutting edge’ rather than traditional design. He has requested the following facilities:
• A well-sized but not excessively large master cabin. This should incorporate a private office/study that can be accessed from the public areas through a different door to that which gives access to the bedroom. There is also to be a dressing room with distinct wardrobe space for him and his wife. The single bathroom should be equipped with twin basins, an enclosed head, a bath, and a separate shower compartment.
• Four guest cabins, two of which should have double beds and two with twin beds.
• One saloon, preferably located on an upper deck to maximise views, opening through wide doors to a sizeable deck area.
• A 10-seat cinema.
• An ‘inside/outside’ dining room with 50% of its perimeter open to an adjacent deck, that has the ability to be fully enclosed with floor-to-ceiling sliding windows in times of bad weather.
• Enclosed stowage for one 7-metre tender and one 6-metre tender.
• A ‘beach club’ relaxation area near to water level.
• A sun deck with spa pool, a selection of sunbathing mattresses and deck chairs, dining area and barbecue facilities. This deck should incorporate some areas permanently shaded and some temporarily shaded by awnings.
• Pantries and other service areas positioned to ensure a high level of personal service for guests.
• Storage for spares and foodstuffs compatible with a three-month cruising autonomy.
• Well appointed crew quarters (that comply with current regulations concerning minimum floor space) for 10 crew.
There are, of course, some restrictions on our new design. These are:
• No modification is allowed to the main engine’s drive train or steering gear.
• No modification of the vessel’s primary tankage is allowed.
• Main engine exhaust casing can be modified above the yacht’s Upper Deck or, alternatively, can be converted to a wet exhaust system but, in either case, air ventilation for the engine room must be provided.
• Generators and all auxiliary machinery can be changed.
• The bow shape can be modified from the bow as far aft as Frame 65, but the vessel’s length must not be increased.
• Modification is allowed to the stern shape but such modifications must not penetrate the steering gear room.
• The well deck forward of the existing superstructure can remain open or be enclosed.
• An open Sun Deck is allowed on top of the Bridge Deck deckhouse.
I would like to be able to submit proposals to the project’s owner on the 11th June 2012 so I will need your ideas by the 9th May 2012 at the very latest. These ideas should be submitted in a single Adobe pdf document containing a maximum of four A3 sized pages laid out as follows:
• Revised general arrangement plan clearly showing your proposals for the new interior layout, together with a table showing the floor areas allocated to each of the areas required above by the owner.
• Renderings of the yacht’s exterior from key angles clearly illustrating any new features.
• Renderings of the yacht’s interior clearly showing the your proposed design style.
• Design Development sketches.
Please be sure to include your full name on each page of your project.
