Day One
The first stop was the Lürssen Rendsburg facility. During the tour, the finalists had the opportunity to see three yachts of around 85 metres all at different stages of build and met with the key technical staff that are responsible for delivering these magnificent vessels.

After the shipyard tour, the trip lead them further south to Bremen. Following dinner at a local restaurant with an impressive view of the Lürssen facilities, they had the opportunity to present their own projects to Lürssen and to each other. The aspiring young designers were enthusiastic about discussing their work and to see the new ideas presented by their peers.

“To visit a superyacht builder like Lurssen was a dream come true for a designer. It was a truly inspirational experience… I couldn’t wait to get sketching on my next project,” reported Misha Merzliakov, 2011 Finalist.

Day Two
The next day began with another shipyard tour through the Lürssen facilities in Bremen and finalists had the opportunity to talk to the Head of the Mechanical Engineering at Lürssen, who gave them a further insight in the complexity of superyacht construction.

Finalist Jorge Jabor commented: “To be able to see the building process of these enormous yachts from sheet metal to interior details was a truly unique opportunity. The time spent with the Lürssen professionals during the tours allowed us to ask questions regarding subjects that are cannot be learned from books.”

Friday afternoon was laid out for entertainment. The young designers had the chance to participate in the annual “Lürssen Bossel Tour”, alongside the owner’s representatives and crews who spend many months in Bremen and Rendsburg during the building process or while their yacht is undergoing refit works.

It was an entertaining and sportive afternoon, with 12 teams battling to win the coveted trophy. Following the game, all teams came together to enjoy a supper of Kohl and Pinkel, a traditional North-German winter dish. After dinner, the DJ’s choice of music got everybody on the dance floor and celebrations lasted into the early hours.

“As a young aspiring designer, I can’t imagine a better opportunity than the Lürssen tour. Our hosts made sure that we were immersed in the entire build process, knowing that we would walk away with valuable knowledge pertaining to our future in the business. The Bossel game and after party wrapped up the trip on a fun note. It was a great opportunity to unwind with new friends”, said Michael Givens, winner of the 2011 Award.

Entering the 2012 Competition

On October 25 at the ShowBoats Design Awards gala evening, the winner of the fourth annual Young Designer of the Year Award was announced in front of an international audience of yacht owners and leading superyacht designers.

Sponsored by Camper & Nicholsons International, the Young Designer of the Year Award is a worldwide initiative launched to uncover the industry’s up-and-coming creative talents, celebrating the best of superyacht design from the boards of student and trainee designers.

This year’s new-style competition drew 30 entries from 20 different countries all over the world, each contestant hoping to take home the €5,000 prize money. Additionally, the winner and top five competition finalists would benefit from a host of incredible opportunities aimed at advancing their early design careers, including complimentary access to the two-day Superyacht Design Symposium and an all-expenses paid trip to visit Lürssen shipyards in Bremen and Rendsburg.

Realism, rather than science fiction was the name of the game and contestants were set a design task which would give them good practice for a career in yacht design while also creating a worthwhile entry for their portfolio. It was not an easy problem that had been set, but the Jury – composed of an elite panel of internationally known yacht designers including Andrew Winch, Dickie Bannenberg & Rob Humphreys – narrowed down the selection to five outstanding finalists and one exceptional winner.

We caught up with Michael, who told us that winning the competition has been a truly life-changing experience:

“Being called on stage to accept the Young Designer of the Year Award was the most exciting moment of my life. I spent the night celebrating, while receiving invaluable advice from designers whose work I have admired for years. With a clear & concise format, the competition allowed me to exercise all my newly learned skills, while being relevant and fun at the same time. It is truly astonishing to be starting out in this industry and have had the opportunity to attend such a prestigious event. The award, along with the entire experience, will be cherished.”

Entries for the Young Designer of the Year Award 2012 will open on December 6, 2011. Entries are invited from current students of yacht design and practising yacht designers who graduated from a bachelor’s degree course (or the international equivalent) in 2010 and thereafter. This evening at the exclusive Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the winners of the 2011 ShowBoats Design Awards were announced to a VIP audience of superyachts owners and the industry’s leading creative talents.

Blohm & Voss’ 312ft motor yacht Palladium was declared the evening’s biggest winner, with designers Mick Leach and Mark Smith taking home an incredible four neptunes for Tender Design, Bespoke Furniture Item, Exterior Design & Styling and Interior Design.

Students of design and recent graduates were called upon to enter the competition, which has in recent years uncovered some of the industry’s most exciting and innovative creative talents. Entries were submitted by talented youngsters from all corners of the globe, including the U.S, Taiwan, New Zealand and Moscow, as well as a large European contingent.

Thirty submissions were deemed to have met the entry requirements, submitted all the required materials and complied with the detailed design brief set by the chairman of the judges, Roger-Lean Vercoe. Of these thirty entries, sixteen front-runners were shortlisted by a subcommittee and put forward for a second round of judging by a panel of internationally known designers.

Each entry was scrutinised in meticulous detail by the judges who, after much deliberation, selected five outstanding finalists and the overall winner. The winner will receive €5,000 prize money and be invited to accept their award at the ShowBoats Design Awards gala evening, in front of an audience of the industry’s most influential players. The winning designer will also gain complimentary entry to the two-day Superyachts Design Symposium which precedes the prize giving ceremony in Palm Beach and a discretionary two-week work experience attachment in an established yacht design office.

Additionally, all finalists will have the rare opportunity to gain some first-hand industry experience at the kind invitation of Lürssen Shipyard, who will once again fly all finalists to Germany to visit their impressive shipyards in Bremen and Rendsburg.
