The Inaugural ShowBoats Design Awards hailed a great success

The inaugural ShowBoats Design Awards took place last night at the exclusive Mar A Lago Club, Donald Trump’s private members club in Palm Beach, Florida. Following a two-day Superyacht Design Symposium, 350 guests gathered for an evening of cocktails, a gala dinner and Awards ceremony honoring the Superyacht industry’s creative talents; the architects, designers, stylists, craftsmen, and innovators in yacht technologies.

Tony Harris, Publisher of ShowBoats International, opened the evening by recognizing and thanking the yacht owners who commission and enable the creative teams and individuals who move the superyacht industry forward. “While these awards are “design” awards, we are acutely aware that it is the owner who takes the risk with a designer or a technology that is untested. Without owners who are prepared to take those risks, the creative aspects of the industry would languish.”

ShowBoats Design Awards evolved from design-focused awards previously a part of the Boat International Media World Superyacht Awards, and introduced a number of new categories. The jury compromised four superyacht owners – specifically chosen for their interest in design issues – two naval architects, a senior yacht captain, an experienced yacht chef, and six design professionals with no links to the superyacht industry. With more than 200 nominations, it was an incredibly tough task for the experienced panel.

“I especially thank the finalists, many of whom are present today, for giving the jury such a hard time in deciding the winners,” said Chairman of the Judges, Roger Lean Vercoe.

A celebration of superyacht design in Palm Beach, Florida

As the superyacht industry has grown and developed over the years, we feel the yachts and the designers and craftsmen behind their construction deserve to be recognised specifically in the areas of interior design, styling, innovation and technology.

The ShowBoats Design Awards will adopt the individual design awards formerly presented at the World Superyacht Awards. A number of new categories will also be added to recognise and acknowledge, for the first time ever, the industry’s talents specific to craft and design. Roger Lean-Vercoe will act as Chairman of the Judges, a neutral panel of experienced and passionate yacht owners, project managers, designers and craftsmen from a variety of backgrounds within the world of design.

Nominations for the ShowBoats Design Awards 2010 are now open and submissions are welcome up until the closing date of 15 April. Click here for a full list of categories and their descriptions. Boat International Media’s team of editors will review these nominations and refine this list to a group of outstanding finalists to be judged by the independent panel at the Judges Day in Monaco in June.

The winners of The ShowBoats Design Awards will be announced at a gala evening at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s private members club in Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday 26th October 2010. Click here to register your interest in attending the glittering awards ceremony.

The Breakers Hotel and Resort in Palm Beach will be this year’s venue for the Superyacht Design Symposium, held prior to the ShowBoats Design Awards and in the run up to the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. We are certain that this relocation from New York will encourage more superyacht owners than ever to participate as both speakers and delegates in sharing their passion for yachts and yacht design.

An exciting two day programme of lively presentation and in-depth discussions will be interspersed by elegant social events and plentiful networking opportunities. We invite superyacht owners to share and compare concepts and experiences with their peers in a professional environment, providing a platform for them to present personal projects for the first time ever to a wider audience.

Stimulating, authoritative, at times even controversial, the Superyacht Design Symposium will raise questions and discussion on the evolving design of superyachts and positively influence future projects. Designers, naval architects, project managers and captains will make up this essential Meeting of Minds, sponsored once again by Amico & Co and Chihuly.
