AWARD CATEGORIES
17 awards will be presented in the following categories:
1. Interior Design Award – Displacement Motor Yachts
Awarded to the interior designers of a qualifying* displacement motor yacht considered by the judges to be the year’s best example of an interior design. The design should match the requirements laid down by the owner of the yacht. The judges will consider its functionality, practicality at sea, division and use of space, and crew workflow, along with its visual impact and innovative features.
2. Interior Design Award – Semi-Displacement or Planing Yachts
Awarded to the interior designers of a qualifying* semi-displacement or planing motor yacht considered by the judges to be the year’s best example of an interior design. The design should match the requirements laid down by the owner of the yacht. The judges will consider its functionality, practicality at sea, division and use of space, and crew workflow, along with its visual impact and innovative features.
3. Interior Design Award – Sailing Yachts
Awarded to the interior designers of a qualifying* sailing yacht considered by the judges to be the year’s best example of an interior design. The design should match the requirements laid down by the owner of the yacht. The judges will consider its functionality, practicality at sea, division and use of space, and crew workflow, along with its visual impact and innovative features.
4. Exterior Design and Styling Award – Motor Yachts
Awarded to the designers of a qualifying* motor yacht considered to be the most inspiring and practical while providing the features demanded by the owner. The quality of the design, its seagoing functionality and its impact on the ability of the crew to perform their duties will also be considered by the judges.
5. Exterior Design and Styling Award – Sailing Yachts
Awarded to the designers of a qualifying* motor yacht considered to be the most inspiring and practical, while providing the features demanded by the owner. The quality of the design, its compatibility with the interior of the yacht, its seagoing functionality, innovative features and its impact on the ability of the crew to perform their duties will be considered by the judges.
6. Award for an Exterior Deck Area Designed for Guest Use
Entries are accepted for one discrete deck area on a qualifying* motor or sailing yacht, such as the sun deck or the bridge deck aft. Entries will be judged on their functionality, amenities, innovative features and practicality of layout.
7. Award for an Interior Recreational Area Designed for Guest Use
Entries are accepted for one discrete area on a qualifying* motor or sailing yacht, such as a gymnasium, beach club, spa room, massage room or diving room, whose design makes best use of the available space. Entries will be judged on their originality, functionality, amenities, innovative features, and practicality of layout.
8. Award for the Design of Crew and Service Areas
This award is presented for the design of a yacht’s crew and service areas. Judges will consider the volume of crew and service areas in relation to that of other areas of the yacht, the size of individual areas, their interconnectivity and discrete functionality, the service flow, level of equipment and the decoration.
9. Interior Layout Award
Awarded to the designers of a motor or sailing yacht who have in the opinion of the judges provided an innovative interior layout that offers well-sized spaces and full functionality while displaying a properly balanced division between guest, crew and technical areas. The judges will also take into account the circulation plans for both guests and crew.
10. Naval Architecture Award – Motor Yachts
This award is intended to recognise naval architects whose qualifying* design for a motor yacht shows efficient hydrodynamics embodied in a hull that properly meets its intended purpose, particularly in respect of performance and economy.
11. Naval architecture – Sailing Yachts
This award is to recognise naval architects whose qualifying* design for a sailing yacht shows efficient hydrodynamics embodied in a hull that properly meets its intended purpose, particularly in respect of performance and all-round sailing ability.
12. Tender Design Award – Sports Tenders
This award is presented to the designer of a sports or general service tender launched within the last three years that is considered by the judges to be the best of its type. Consideration will be given to its appearance, cockpit design, mechanical installation, functionality and performance suited to its task.
13. Tender Design Award – Limousine Tenders
This award is presented to the designer of a limousine tender launched within the last three years whose passengers are completely protected from the elements by a hard or soft canopy. Consideration will be given to its appearance, cockpit design, mechanical installation, functionality and performance suited to its task.
14. Bespoke Furniture Award
This award is presented to the designer of an item of bespoke furniture or interior fitting designed specifically for and positioned aboard a qualifying* yacht. The item may be either built-in or freestanding or fitted.
15. Galley Design Award
This award is presented to the designer of the galley that is considered by the judges to be the best of its kind fitted to a qualifying* yacht. The judges will consider the galley’s layout together with its functionality, equipment, size and location of preparation and plating-up areas, ease of cleaning, the storage of utensils and dry goods, its chilled and frozen stores, the chef’s working conditions and access for service. Also under consideration will be the flow of ingredients, from delivery to storage and on to preparation, cooking, plating-up, service and the subsequent cleaning of plates and utensils, respecting the rules of hygiene and cross-contamination.
16. Newcomer of the Year Award
This award is open to designers or design companies who have seen the delivery of their first yacht-related work in the qualifying year. The judges will consider the entry for its design and functionality in relation to the experience of the entrant.
17. Design and Technology Award
This award is presented to the designer/manufacturer of the most innovative item of technical equipment first installed within a superyachts during the past three years.
* The term ‘qualifying’ should be read as: ‘Yachts of over 30-metres LOA delivered to their owners between 1st January and 31st December 2009, nominated on the ShowBoats Design Awards website and accepted by Boat International Media as a qualified entrant’.
