The ShowBoats Design Awards moves to Monaco
Boat International Media is delighted to announce that the third annual ShowBoats Design Awards will take place during The Rendezvous in Monaco on June 22, 2012.
The ShowBoats Design Awards is an exciting addition to a four day program of events for superyacht owners at the glamorous heart of superyachting in Monaco.
Guests of The Rendezvous and the industry’s leading creative talents will join us in celebrating excellence in yacht design at a glittering awards ceremony and gala dinner, to be held at the magnificent Monaco Opera House on the second day of The Rendezvous.
The ShowBoats Design Awards focuses specifically on fundamental aspects of superyacht design such as naval architecture, exterior design and interior layout, and brings the specialist design skills of the industry’s most talented teams into the spotlight. In 2012, a revised list of eighteen categories and subcategories has been devised in consultation with owners, builders and designers, to best reflect the talents we aim to recognise.
Nominations for the ShowBoats Design Awards 2012 are now open!
Yacht designers, builders, owners and yachting enthusiasts are encouraged to submit their nominations before closing on February 15, 2012. To qualify, all yachts must be of over 100ft LOA and have been completed and delivered to their owners between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

And the winner is…
Presenting this year’s winner and announcing the 2012 competition
On October 25 at the ShowBoats Design Awards gala evening, the winner of the fourth annual Young Designer of the Year Award was announced in front of an international audience of yacht owners and leading superyacht designers.
Sponsored by Camper & Nicholsons International, the Young Designer of the Year Award is a worldwide initiative launched to uncover the industry’s up-and-coming creative talents, celebrating the best of superyacht design from the boards of student and trainee designers.
This year’s new-style competition drew 30 entries from 20 different countries all over the world, each contestant hoping to take home the €5,000 prize money. Additionally, the winner and top five competition finalists would benefit from a host of incredible opportunities aimed at advancing their early design careers, including complimentary access to the two-day Superyacht Design Symposium and an all-expenses paid trip to visit Lürssen shipyards in Bremen and Rendsburg.
Realism, rather than science fiction was the name of the game and contestants were set a design task which would give them good practice for a career in yacht design while also creating a worthwhile entry for their portfolio. It was not an easy problem that had been set, but the Jury – composed of an elite panel of internationally known yacht designers including Andrew Winch, Dickie Bannenberg & Rob Humphreys – narrowed down the selection to five outstanding finalists and one exceptional winner.

We caught up with Michael, who told us that winning the competition has been a truly life-changing experience:
“Being called on stage to accept the Young Designer of the Year Award was the most exciting moment of my life. I spent the night celebrating, while receiving invaluable advice from designers whose work I have admired for years. With a clear & concise format, the competition allowed me to exercise all my newly learned skills, while being relevant and fun at the same time. It is truly astonishing to be starting out in this industry and have had the opportunity to attend such a prestigious event. The award, along with the entire experience, will be cherished.”
Entries for the Young Designer of the Year Award 2012 will open on December 6, 2011. Entries are invited from current students of yacht design and practising yacht designers who graduated from a bachelor’s degree course (or the international equivalent) in 2010 and thereafter. The competition brief, rules and the entry requirements will be published on the ShowBoats Design Awards website on this date.
